Letter from the Editor:
Online Comments

Dear Readers,

You might have noticed we don't have a comment section on any of our articles except our Health Blog. That's because our goal at Upwind is to foster long-term and continuous conversations within a productive atmosphere, and we don't believe that can happen from an online comment section.

Online comments often hide behind anonymity, allowing them to say whatever they want, to whomever they want, without any form of accountability. An extensive study from The Guardianshowed that out of the "70 million comments left on its site since 2006...of the 10 most abused writers eight are women, and the two men are black." It's clear that one group, white men, are benefiting from the online comment culture of modern media.

We are determined to make Upwind a site that highlights the voices we hear from least by protecting our writers from hate mail.

That's why we're introducing the "Upwind Feedback" link on the footer of the site. If you have any questions, comments, and/or feedback, please fill out the attached Google Form, and we'll go live online to respond to your comments. We'll also be available to take any live questions.

The first feedback live session will be November 2, from 5-6 pm PST/8-9 pm EST.

Save the date, and see you there!

Best,
Laurel Oldershaw
Founder and CEO, Upwind Ultimate LLC.
